Tips for better care of your septic system

Caring for your Septic Tank

Septic Tanks utilize bacteria to breakdown solid waste. Certain household items can kill the helpful bacteria and cause solids to back up in your septic tank. To make sure that your septic tank is working properly, do not allow these items down your drains:

1.      Dental Floss

2.      Feminine Products

3.      Diapers

4.      Cigarette Butts

5.      Cat Litter

6.      Facial Tissues

7.      Cotton Swabs

8.      Coffee Grounds

9.      Paper Towels

10.  Condoms

11.  Household Chemicals

12.  Gasoline

13.  Grease

14.  Paint

15.  Bleach

Also, the use of garbage disposals are discouraged. If you do install a garbage disposal, we suggest that you use it sparingly and have your septic tank pumped out every year.

How often should you have your septic tank pumped? Depending on the size of your tank and the people in your household, we suggest having your tank pumped once every 1-5 years.

How can you prevent your septic tank from overflowing? Your septic tank has a max capacity. As the water enters the tank, the excess fluid will filter out to the drain field. You must allow the water time to evacuate to the drain field by limiting your water usage.

To manage your water use, make sure to be watch for these:

·         Leaking pipes and toilets

·         Use less water when doing smaller loads of laundry

·         Spread out laundry over time

Avoid putting heavy items over your septic tank.
